Sembcorp extended scholarships to outstanding polytechnic students
April 25, 2008
For the first time in 18 years, Sembcorp awarded scholarships to outstanding polytechnic students pursuing water and environment studies at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Under the scholarship, the students would receive sponsorship for their polytechnic education and be given attachment opportunities with the company to apply their specialized knowledge and skills in a real-life setting. Upon graduation, they would join the company where they could grow their careers.

The extension of Sembcorp’s scholarship programme to include polytechnic students would boost the manpower resource for the company's water business and further widen talent base in the company.

The eight scholarship recipients were second and third year students from Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s Civil and Environmental Engineering and Environment and Water Technology faculties. They received the awards from Sembcorp's Group President & CEO, Tang Kin Fei, at a presentation ceremony held on April 24, 2008.

"We are delighted to award scholarships to these eight outstanding students. Not only have they excelled academically, they have demonstrated, through achievements in co-curricular activities, strength of character and a drive to excel. In short, they have the potential to blossom into future leaders of Sembcorp," said Mr Tang.

The scholarship formed part of a bigger collaboration between Sembcorp and Ngee Ann Polytechnic's upcoming Centre of Innovation for Environmental and Water Technology. Both parties were working towards signing a Memorandum of Understanding for the collaboration in a few months.

Sponsorship was an integral part of Sembcorp's social responsibility. To date, the Sembcorp Scholarship programme is supporting 44 scholars at various stages of their careers and studies. The programme has been successful in helping talented young people by sponsoring their tertiary education and grooming them to be future leaders of the company.
Cultivating programmes for continuous learning
Sembcorp's collaboration with Ngee Ann Polytechnic was structured towards enhancing our water personnel's competencies and growing our skilled manpower pool for deployment to our local and overseas water businesses. Ultimately, it would contribute to the long-term success of our water business.

One of the many initiatives involved setting up an online, interactive knowledge management system offering different modules on water technology. It is a platform where our staff could refresh and upgrade their skills, anytime, anywhere, and at their own pace.

Besides the multimedia interactive learning platform, Ngee Ann Poly would also develop short courses customized to meet Sembcorp's needs. There would be courses on water treatment, wastewater treatment, advanced water reclamation, which were our water capabilities. Special focus topics like Advanced Membrane Technology would also be developed. These courses would instill a standard set of core competencies among our water personnel and they would be useful for training new staff.

As part of this collaboration, Sembcorp would also commission the staff and students of Ngee Ann Poly project work which would complement our water capabilities. For example, a group of 2nd and 3rd year students were commissioned to work on a study on Anaerobic Biomass Growth. In short, our collaboration with Ngee Ann Polytechnic would enhance the skilled manpower pipeline and boost our water capabilities.
